Visiting Christ the Redeemer

The rights of commercial use of the image of Christ on Corcovado belong to the Mitra Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, although there is dispute over the heirs of those involved in the design of the work. The Christ the Redeemer2monument is in the area ceded by the Archdiocese of Rio in the 1930s, but access to the statue is carried through the National Park of Tijuca Forest, administered by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources

Free entry for Catholics
On 21 November 2007, the superintendent of IBAMA, Rogerio Rocco, said that from that time on the Catholics could go free in Christ the Redeemer, but only on dates scheduled by the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.

The decision caused grief for admirers of the statue and who followed other religions and those who advocated secularism of the state.

Catholic Shrine
Another decision that has caused grief to Protestant admirers of the image of Christ was the effort to turn the statue into a Catholic shrine in commemoration of the 75 years on 12 October 2006.

There is also at the base of the monument, a Catholic chapel devoted to Our Lady of Aparecida, where Catholic rites are celebrated and weddings and baptisms are enacted.

Access
Christ the Redeemer can be accessed by the railroad Cosme Velho and now there is access for the disabled to make access to the observation deck easier in 2002, the City of Rio installed three panoramic elevators and four escalators as part of the renovation of the project of the Christ.

Cinema

In the movie 2012, Roland Emmerich, in a scene that depicts the end of the world shows the falling of Christ the Redeemer Corcovado Mountain during an earthquake.

Seven Wonders of the World
President Lula speaking in Corcovado to promote the election of Christ as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern world. On July 7, 2007, at a party held in Portugal, the Christ Redeemer statue was included among the new seven wonders of the modern world.

The decision, after an informal tender, was based on the popular vote by internet and telephone that passed the house with a tally of a hundred million votes. However, the contest does not have the support of UNESCO, which identified the lack of scientific criteria for the choice of the wonders.

Replicas

Christ the King, in Portugal.
Portugal has a similar sculpture at the mouth of the Tagus River in its south bank in the city of Almada. The monument, facing Lisbon, was inaugurated on May 17, 1959 and is the best viewpoint of the Portuguese capital.

The monument, known as Christ the King, is one of the highest buildings in Portugal at 110 meters high. In Brazil, the city of Taubate, in Sao Paulo, also built a replica of the monument of Christ the Redeemer, whose construction began in 1953 and which was inaugurated on March 31, 1956. The monument Taubateanos stands at 21 meters, eight meters on the pedestal.

The city of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, also has a similar monument, known as Christ the Light. The monument, located on the hill of the Cross, one of the highest points of the city, is 33 meters high, only five less than Christ Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro, and 22 m wide.

In all it weighs 528 tonnes and was carved by hand in mortar, and built in iron, steel and cement. The monument shows Christ and in his left hand he holds a light gun of 6.6 thousand watts, symbolizing the sun, which rotates at an angle of 180 and is directed to the City.

The city of New Corrals in Rio Grande do Norte also has a replica of the Statue installed in the town square called “Christ the King and a there is a replica in the city of Caxias, Maranhao.
