Ipanema Beach

Ipanema the neighbourhood was founded in 1894 and is one of the most famous of Rio de Janeiro, and one of the most luxurious. The Ipanema Beachdistrict is upbeat and modern and you can find great variety of cafes, restaurants, luxury boutiques and nightclubs that are among the best of Rio and the rest of the country.

Located in the Southern Zone of the city and borders the districts of Leblon, Copacabana and Lagoa.

Ipanema the name of the suburb means “dangerous waters, no fish river” in Tupi-Guarani.

The land of Ipanema like those of Leblon belong to the French Charles Le Blond, who sold them to Francis Joseph Fialho, who sold them on to the Baron de Ipanema in 1878. The latter made the Ipanema Villa subdivision and founded the area in 1894.

General Osorio Square was first called Marechal Floriano Peixoto, while Nossa Senhora da Paz bore the name of Colonel Valadares. At the end of the 1960s this area became the epicentre of the vanguard of Rio, with the arrival of musical movements like the Tropicalia and the bossa nova, Teatro

Ipanema and the Cultural Revolution broke free from the historic beaches with the thong and topless bikini.

Tourism

Ipanema Beach is next to the Copacabana, one of the most famous of the city.
The area is known internationally as a gay tourist destination, which makes Ipanema in the ideal pink city meeting place. The area of the beach near Posto 6 is frequented by the gay community and it is said that the rua Farme de Amoedo is “the gayest street in the world.

Next to the Cristo Redentor, Sugar Loaf and Copacabana, Ipanema is one of the most emblematic of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and according to “Discovery Travel & Living” is the second best beach in the world and the sexiest of all.

Geography
The distinctive feature are the beaches of Ipanema. The sea is fierce and the unusual waves make it a destination choice for surfers. The east beach ends in Arpoador.
